Darlene Gallinger-Long of The Standard shows there's more than one way to give back

Name: Darlene Gallinger-Long
Company: The Standard
Job: Disability Benefits Analyst, Employee Benefits

What She Did: Through The Standard’s 2017 Employee Giving Campaign (EGC), scheduled volunteer activities at work, her kids’ schools and her church, Darlene Gallinger-Long is deeply involved in her community. That participation is a strong force that blends both her professional and personal lives as she’s passionate about setting an active example for her children.

At work, Darlene is on the EGC committee for the Tanasbourne Home Office employees, which means she helps plan activities that raise participation in the annual giving campaign. She is also in charge of her team’s monthly activities calendar and makes sure to include an assortment of volunteer opportunities, from fun runs to blood drives.

After a group outing to volunteer at the local Oregon Food Bank, where her team helped bag food to be distributed to those in need, the team is now thinking of adding a food donation component to this year’s EGC activities.

Why It's Important: Darlene believes volunteering not only gives encouragement to others but brings so much reward back to her. “I love that The Standard encourages volunteering in our communities,” she said. “I’m glad to work here. The reward is great when you care and invest in people’s lives. You get so much more back than what you expected. It opens up a piece of your heart that you might not realize is there.”
