Jose Rivas of Starbucks mentors and guides youth towards professional success

Name: Jose Rivas
Company: Starbucks Coffee Company
Job : District Manager, Clackamas/Sellwood/South Waterfront

What He Did: As a member of New Avenues for Youth’s board of directors, Jose Rivas was inspired to learn about Starbucks commitment to hire 100,000 Opportunity Youth by 2020. Since joining the company in 2016, he has participated in activities like the Opportunity Youth Fair, which Gateway to College helped organize on April 13, 2018. The most recent fair resulted in 45 on-the-spot job offers.

Why It's Important: “I was so inspired by Starbucks’ mission to provide employment opportunities to these youth,” said Jose. “They are the future, and it’s an honor to be part of the process of mentoring and guiding them towards professional success.”

Organization Supported: Starbucks’ Opportunity for All initiative focuses on supporting three populations – Opportunity Youth, veterans and military spouses, and refugees. Opportunity Youth are the 4.9 million 16 to 24 year olds who are not working or in school. While these individuals face certain obstacles, 77 percent believe they have a responsibility to get a good education and job.
