Mary Gordon discovers through her employer, The Standard, a great cause in Friends of the Children

Name: Mary Gordon
Company: The Standard
Job: Corporate Meeting and Conference Manager, Retirement Plans

What She Did: During a monthly volunteer project coordinated by The Standard, Mary Gordon discovered Friends of the Children. Seeing the impact the nonprofit has, she decided to get more involved. Mary went from being a book buddy, to helping organize their annual fundraiser, which last year raised $1.8 million. Last fall, she joined the Ambassador Board, where she now acts as a spokesperson in the local community.

Why It's Important: “It really appeals to me that what they do is working,” Mary said. “That benefits all of us. So working with them is one of the best ways I can help create the world I want to live in.”

Organization Supported: Friends of the Children was established in Portland in 1993 to break the cycle of generational poverty by providing a stable mentor to high-risk children. It developed a model where it employs and trains mentors, called Friends, who spend time in each child’s home, school, neighborhood and community.
