Portland: "We have a choice: chaos or community"
The words of former State Sen. Avel Gordly at today's citywide press conference are a gentle reminder to all of us, "we have a choice: chaos or community."
Our teams are on edge, our members, our community partners, all of us. Portland Mayor Wheeler has declared a state of emergency as verdict is declared in Derek Chauvin trial. (OregonLive/Oregonian)
As we shared last week, we call on all to do what you can to be a part of the change. Act locally and support what's going on right now in our community that gets us to real change for our Black, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, and Latino neighbors -- and all communities of color.
For employers and others in our community, we encourage you to take action to change policies and practices to be more inclusive and equitable. We encourage you to be familiar with resources available to support your teams as we all navigate current events. Please see links to resources below, provided by our teams at Partners in Diversity. And support events that bring people together: Hope rising up against hate.
We support Portland's valued traditions of First Amendment rights and expression of free speech, but we call on all those committed to violent acts to stop. Enough is enough.
Be well and support each other.
