American Cancer Society hosts drive thru event to celebrate breast cancer awareness month

Passionate and determined supporters of the American Cancer Society joined together early this morning, committed to funding the future of breast cancer research by supporting Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Oregon and SW Washington. This year local teams shifted gears - reimagining the annual walk as a celebration involving vehicles parading onto the Daimler Trucks North America campus on Swan Island.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Oregon and SW Washington has grown to be one of the most engaging breast cancer events in the Portland metro area. Local teams are encouraged to keep raising funds and join the movement online at MakingStridesWalk.org/PortlandOR.

Dollars raised from Making Strides help the American Cancer Society fund the future for innovative breast cancer research; provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk; and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most. The impact of COVID-19 will reduce the American Cancer Society’s ability to fund cancer research by 50% in 2020, their lowest investment this century if current trends continue.

The Making Strides movement continues to draw upon a wide range of supporters, from this year’s flagship sponsor, Dynalectric to Consumer Cellular, Capitol Auto Group, media partners 101.9 KINK-FM & 98.7 The Bull and national partners AVON and ZTA. Each sponsor deeply committed to funding the future and finishing the fight breast cancer.

“COVID has made a huge impact on the future of cancer as we know it,” offered event manager Whitney Welches. “It has undermined the very mission and work we do at the American Cancer Society and now, more than ever, we need to come together as a community in the fight against breast cancer.”
