SIGN PETITION: Support IP 57 – People Not Politicians

In this time of uncertainty, there is one thing we can all agree on–every Oregonian deserves to be represented and every eligible voter’s vote should count.

Even as Oregon has elected more women, people of color, and LGBTQ candidates to state office in recent elections, our communities are still significantly underrepresented. Although approximately 25% of Oregonians are people of color, only 10% of current state legislators are people of color and some communities are not represented at all. One minority-majority district is an improvement. But all communities of color deserve an equal chance to elect representatives that share their lived experience.

We are working to make this a reality in Oregon.

People Not Politicians is a diverse coalition that has come together from all party affiliations, income levels, backgrounds, identities, and all corners of Oregon to rally for equal, fair and transparent representation at the state and congressional level. We may not focus on the same issues or have the same perspective about everything, but we are invested in this effort because it’s too important to ignore.

Portland Business Alliance is proud to be a member of this diverse statewide coalition. And it’s not just organizations like ours, NAACP, League of Women Voters of Oregon, Oregon Farm Bureau and Common Cause Oregon. Hundreds of thousands of Oregonians believe we deserve the best possible representative government produced through a fair, unbiased and transparent process.

That’s why People Not Politicians is gathering signatures from every corner of our state to put IP 57 on the ballot this November and give everyday Oregonians the opportunity to make their voices heard.

This year’s census results will reshape Oregon’s political landscape making redistricting reform more important than ever.

Currently the process for drawing congressional and legislative district boundaries is controlled by the state legislature. As our state grows, it is essential to ensure that our voting districts represent communities – our schools, our grocery stores, our neighborhood parks – not entrenched political power.

People Not Politicians is proposing IP 57, a ballot measure initiative that would put people in charge of drawing district lines by creating an independent citizen redistricting commission of Oregon voters to draw Oregon’s state and congressional voting maps – 12 voters, who are not elected officials or political party officials or major donors, carefully selected to reflect the racial, ethnic and geographic diversity of the state.

In order to qualify for the ballot, the coalition needs to collect 150,000 signatures by the July 2, 2020 deadline. We need the support of every Oregonian who believes that people, not politicians, should draw our voting maps.
