Portland: More people, more visitors, more trash

Look around Portland, in the downtown or in the neighborhoods, garbage is more prevalent on public property. In fact, more than 2 million pounds of garbage was picked up by city crews in 2017.

Many people point the finger at the homeless for the increase in street trash and other waste.

But the increase in the trash is not just from the homeless who live on the streets. The Clean and Safe District, funded by downtown businesses, said the increase is related to all the people who are moving to Portland and those who come to visit.

"Right now it's overwhelming our system, which is serviced by a patchwork of contractors," said Lisa Frisch with Clean and Safe."We definitely need more coordination, more pickup."
