Now accepting applications for Small Business Management Scholarship Program

Portland, Ore. – The Portland Business Alliance and Portland Community College’s (PCC) Small Business Development Center (SBDC) are now accepting applications for the 2017-18 Small Business Management Scholarship Program.

“Since the program began eight years ago, it has helped local small businesses expand and add jobs,” said Sandra McDonough, president and CEO of the Portland Business Alliance. “The program provides small business owners with the resources and time they need to reflect on their business, and develop new strategies and innovative ideas to enable their growth.”

Every year, the program works with 12 small business owners who have been in business for three to five years, have at least one employee and are looking to take their business to the next level. Program participants meet each month for classes conducted by experts at SBDC. Topics include:

  • Sourcing capital and financing;
  • Marketing and financial management; and
  • Exploring new markets.

Program participants receive a $1,300 scholarship toward the $1,800 course tuition and are only responsible for the remaining $500. Additionally, each participant receives a two-year small business level membership with the Alliance, valued at $820 a year.

The program is funded by grants from the Alliance’s Charitable Institute and Bank of America.

“Bank of America is proud to help small businesses in the region access the tools for long-term success,” said Craig Christenson, Bank of America’s small business banking manager. “This program allows us to help connect members in our community with the resources they need to take their business to the next level.”

From 2011 to 2015, 59 small businesses successfully completed the program. Those program graduates have added a total of 56 full-time jobs and 68 part-time jobs to the local economy, and have achieved sales growth of more than $5.5 million.

To participate in the program, small business owners should fill out an application form by Monday, Oct. 16. A selection committee will review applications and conduct interviews in November. Participants will be selected in December and will begin the one-year program in February.
