Update: Ordinance to reduce plastics in Portland passes

Portland City Council passed an ordinance on Nov. 14 that will reduce the city’s reliance on single-use plastics like straws and utensils. Alliance membership was overwhelmingly in favor of the effort, but highlighted potential considerations around use by disabled individuals or critical care patients who require plastic straws to consume beverages, and to also take into account large venues with concessionaires that rely on compostable plastics. The Alliance sent a letter in September supporting the city’s efforts, and more specifically, a by-request policy for plastic straws, utensils and condiment containers, among other single-use plastic items.

The approved ordinance has broad community support and the Alliance will work with our members and the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability staff to ensure a smooth transition to this new, sustainable process. The new rules take effect on July 1, 2019.
