Alliance joins national coalition of Chambers for Transit

In November, the Alliance joined a growing nationwide coalition called Chambers for Transit, a group formed through national advocacy organization Transportation for America. In joining this coalition, the Alliance has committed to be a leading regional voice demanding smart, measurable transit infrastructure investments from the federal government.

The Chambers for Transit coalition will push the Trump Administration to fully spend already-allocated transit dollars, as the U.S. Department of Transportation received more than $1.4 billion from Congress in fiscal year 2018 to invest in new transit construction and improvement projects across the country. While the 2019 budget is still awaiting final action by Congress, both the House and Senate would infuse the transit capital program with more than $2.5 billion. Additionally, while about half of that money would be for advancing already approved multi-year transit projects, approximately $1.5 billion would be intended to advance new projects in the pipeline. Our local and statewide governments are relying on federal funding for projects like the SW Corridor Light Rail, bus rapid transit projects, and the eventual replacement of the Interstate 5 Bridge, demonstrating the importance of our participation in this coalition.
