Portland City Council approves 2018-19 city budget

On May 16, Portland City Council unanimously adopted the FY 2018-19 city budget. It includes an increase in the business license tax from its current rate of 2.2 percent to 2.6 percent of net income, as well as an increase in the owner’s compensation deduction from $103,000 to $125,000. Expected to generate an additional $15 million, the Alliance worked with Mayor Wheeler to ensure the additional revenue goes toward measurable outcomes related to key priorities such as public safety, addressing homelessness, increasing access to mental health care and small business support. Unfortunately, Commissioner Chloe Eudaly offered an amendment, which passed with support from Commissioners Fish and Fritz, striking a budget note that limited future increases in the business license tax and called for revisiting this year’s increase if other business-focused taxes are enacted in the next year.
