Expanding tools to combat livability issues
Working closely with the Alliance and local leaders, Mayor Ted Wheeler announced that he would be implementing new tools to address livability issues, including more police walking patrols and additional high-pedestrian zones in the central city. The first phase of the high-pedestrian zones has been implemented, garnering both positive responses from businesses, employees and residents downtown, and pushback from some community members who have suggested this is an effort to criminalize homelessness. The Alliance has always clearly communicated that livability issues and the homelessness crisis are not synonymous. Addressing livability issues is about illegal behaviors, not the status of being homeless, which must be treated with compassion. Read our statement on high-pedestrian zones.
