The Value of Jobs coalition, led by the Portland Business Alliance, released its latest report, Automation and the Future of Work, which explores issues related to technological changes, and the impact this escalating trend will have on Oregon communities and the state’s workforce. The report, which was developed by EcoNorthwest on behalf of the Value of Jobs coalition, explores issues related to technological changes and the impact this escalating trend will have on our communities and workforce. Using an Oxford University study that identified more than 700 U.S. jobs at risk of automation, this Value of Jobs report provides Oregon-specific estimates based on the demographic and industry make-up of the state. Though the Oxford study provides a high-end estimate of the number of jobs that will be impacted, it demonstrates how the future of work is changing. The report concludes that, for Oregonians to be able to broadly share in future prosperity, it is critical that state and regional policymakers redouble efforts to boost the skills of workers who will face the ever more complex future of work. Embracing innovation and being proactive will ensure Oregon cannot simply weather the changes that will undoubtedly occur as a result of automation, but actually benefit from them. Several policy recommendations are included to ensure the region and state are being proactive to capitalize opportunities presented by automation and ensure all Oregonians can thrive in the evolving future of work.
