On July 18, 2017, the Portland Business Alliance was awarded a Communications Excellence Best in Show Award and Grand Award from the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE) in recognition of our Portland Can Do Better advocacy campaign. The award ceremony was held in Nashville, TN.

Portland Can Do Better, which called on city leaders to prioritize more indoor shelters for individuals experiencing homelessness, generated more than 17,000 comments to Portland City Council advocating for a more humane approach to the homelessness crisis that has enveloped our city. The most recent Point in Time Count, released in June, showed that while the number of homeless individuals in Multnomah County increased, the number of people who were unsheltered decreased. This is in contrast to other communities that saw an increase in both the total number of homeless and unsheltered homeless individuals. Portland’s relative success comes from the opening of more than 600 new shelter beds under the leadership of the city, county and the Joint Office of Homeless Services.

We would like to acknowledge the partnership with Gallatin Public Affairs and Alliance board member Dan Lavey on our campaign.
