The Portland Business Alliance is a participant in Brighter Oregon, the Oregon Business Plan coalition, formed to advocate for a solution to the $1.6 billion state budget deficit. The coalition’s framework includes 1) growing the economy; 2) slowing runaway costs in state spending, particularly related to public employee compensation and health care; and 3) considering new revenue tied to specific results, such as improved K-12 and higher education outcomes.

With cost increases outpacing significant revenue growth, Brighter Oregon is calling for shared responsibility and compromise. Legislators are asked to first close the deficit through spending reform, then engage in conversations about new revenues. The coalition, however, has made it clear that while a variety of revenue options should be under consideration, a gross receipts tax is not one of them. On March 31, Brighter Oregon launched an online and social media presence to engage Oregonians and invite them to participate in the conversation about the importance of the state living within its means to ensure a more sustainable, long-term fiscal solution for the state.
