Portland’s ‘Ban the Box’ took effect this month
The City of Portland’s “Ban the Box” ordinance officially went into effect on July 1, impacting all but the smallest businesses in Portland. The measure goes beyond the state of Oregon’s “Ban the Box” measure that went into effect in January, and prohibits employers in the state from asking job applicants to disclose criminal convictions on job applications. The city’s ordinance goes a step further by prohibiting questions about an applicant’s criminal history until after a conditional offer of employment has been made.
