Oregon Zoo mourns loss of Asian elephant Packy, oldest male of his species

The Oregon Zoo is mourning the loss of Asian elephant Packy, who was humanely euthanized after an ongoing fight against a drug-resistant strain of TB. Packy, who first arrived at the zoo in April of 1962, earned international attention, including an 11-page feature in Life magazine, as the first elephant born in the Western Hemisphere in 44 years. At nearly 55 years-old, he was the oldest male of his species in North America.
