Portland, Ore. -- As the leaders of Oregon’s four largest general business advocacy groups including Portland Business Alliance, Associated Oregon Industries, Oregon Business Council and Oregon Business Association, we would like to express our appreciation and support for the efforts undertaken this week by Governor John Kitzhaber and the Democratic and Republican leadership of the House and Senate to find agreement on a legislative package to reduce the spiraling cost of the Public Employee Retirement System.
While the details of the general agreement reached today are still being refined and more analysis needs to be done, we want to compliment the Governor and legislative leaders on their statesmanlike approach to addressing this issue.
We recognize that achieving a bargain on reducing the cost of PERS will require give-and-take from both sides and can not be achieved without some agreement on additional revenue.  The business community and our organizations have acknowledged this reality and hope that, as the details of the package come into sharper focus, legislators continue to approach this issue in the spirit of compromise and with the long term best interests of the state foremost in their minds.
