PORTLAND, Ore. – Through an ongoing partnership between the city of Portland, Portland Business Alliance and Downtown Clean & Safe, 60 new BigBelly solar-powered trash compactors were installed in downtown Portland. The new cans are spread throughout Old Town Chinatown, the Pioneer District and other parts of Downtown.
With the 60 new units, there are now 140 BigBelly trash compactors throughout downtown Portland installed by Downtown Clean & Safe. The new units were purchased by Clean & Safe, and donated to the city of Portland, who will own and manage the units.
“Helping keep downtown clean is a priority,” said Greg Goodman member of the Downtown Clean & Safe Board. “These compactors hold five times more litter than a conventional garbage can, and the additional capacity will help keep sidewalks clean as we transition into a busy, high traffic season in downtown.”
Thanks to its built-in trash compactor, a BigBelly can hold up to five times the amount of refuse as a conventional can. On average, a regular trash can is serviced five times per week; a BigBelly is typically serviced once a week.
In addition to Clean & Safe, major sponsors include Melvin Mark Properties, City Center Parking, Portland General Electric, Columbia Sportswear, Gerding Edlen, Lease Crutcher Lewis, Hoffman Construction, TMT Development, and Portland Development Commission.
